““In Submarine, Anurag Andra dives deep into Indian-American boyhood and the complexities of family. Here we find an ocean of pain, longing, and regret but also an exquisite buoyancy as our young narrator surfaces into adulthood, finding his way toward hope and forgiveness and reminding us of the powerful pull of home. Andra is an electrifying new writer to watch.””
““Anurag Andra’s Submarine brings insight, poetry and emotional resonance to the story of a young man’s coming of age. Andra’s carefully wrought prose keeps us in the present moment and tethered to the psyche of the young narrator. The result is a moving narrative, journeying to those places and times where there is ‘nowhere left to go.’ This is a promising debut.””
““Submarine’s got that wonderful, necessary messiness of real life. Reading it is a process of getting to know someone so intimately, it might even tell you things about yourself.””
““I read Submarine in one sitting. With lyrical prose and well sculpted characters, this coming-of-age story kept me engrossed and rooting for Subramaniam, the novella’s protagonist, who as the only son of Indian immigrants, deals with countless tribulations. Anurag Andra details with both skill and compassion the ways in which Sub, as he comes to be known, navigates challenging worlds both inside and outside his home. This must-read novella’s wrenching, gorgeous words will linger in readers’ minds for a long, long time.””
Anurag was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in Bridgewater, NJ. He is a graduate of the University of Colorado’s M.F.A. Creative Writing program, and holds a B.A. in Economics and Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh.
